Last week the snow came down around Washington hard. I was house/cat sitting for my family, and ended up being snowed-in for a few days.

New Years on an island

For New Years, Dane and I decided to go on a little trip Orcas Island in the San Juans. We drove through Anacortes and missed our first ferry by ONE car.... but that was alright. We made the best of it by buying booze and eating amazing veggie hotdogs in the beautiful Cap Sante park. We made sure to be in the ferry line extra early for the next run which gave us plenty of time to paint our nails!

The sun went down while we were on the ferry, so we had to find our bed & breakfast in the dark... we knew it was on a farm - but when the sun rose the next morning the view was breathtaking (and they had a dozen new tiny lambs running around)! We found our delightful bed & breakfast run by a sweet old couple online, and I would highly recommend it (the bathroom was HUUUUUGE!). We also had massages on the island and had a Mexican feast on new year's eve!

On New Years day, we spent the entire day exploring every road on the island. We visited the lakes, parks, and drove all the way to the top and saw Canada!

Bare December Trees

I can’t believe it’s December already! This year has gone by so fast, it’s kind of nerve-racking. I look back and think I’ve accomplished a lot and have been busy the whole time, but then again what if I haven’t done enough? Well, guess I have one more month for 2011!

This weekend Dane and I went for a walk in The Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. The trees were bare, the sun was too bright to see strait, and the air was cold, but it was beautiful. There were tones of bird watchers with really nice cameras and I can see why. We saw eagles, hawks, blue herons, and a white crane (never seen one of those in Washington before…)! Nature walks away from the city clear my head and put me at ease. Every peaceful outing is precious to me.

a wednesday walk in the park with dane. a bit colder than what we've seen for the past few months, but i'm excited to be able to wear my new coat that i got in july.... :)
i noticed my favorite cashmere sweater got a hole in the elbow on the walk, i've had it forever so i suppose it was coming. elbow patches? and dane figured out a neat camera trick for cold weather. breathing on the lens to fog it up and shoot that way. it looks like a dream!

Last night my mom received a 2011 Woman of Influence award from The Business Examiner! Her story is quite similar to how my own life is turning out to be. She grew up extremely dyslexic (it runs in the family...) and found her passion in art and design. She built PJ Hummel & Company from the ground up, and now mentors other young entrepreneurs. (like our friend Jaimie of Art of Floral, I designed her website too!)

This weekend I house sat for my parents and took care of the kitties. Moe is the last of my childhood pets, he's 15 now - but just as beautiful as ever. And then there's little Charlie... he just turned 1! :)

Washington summer

Here in Washington, it has only really felt like summer for the past month, we hit 70 degrees! Yeah! Unlike the rest of the US who are suffering from a ridicules heat wave, it been an oddly cold summer over here. And now with one month of the summer season left, I'm bored with it... It's finally hot enough to walk around without a sweater, but I feel like wearing tights and coats again, I really want it to be fall. The way things are looking though - I think the northwest is going to have an indian summer... it will be late October and still warm... :/

Also, now that it's hot outside, my brand new refrigerator has a broken compressor, and is dead! Three months ago i requested a new fridge because the original one in my apartment was super small, and only had an ice box which wasn't cold enough to use for frozen items (no ice cream!!). They sent us a new one, it was too big, a month later they sent us another new one, it was TOO BIG! Then they cut off part of our counter-top, and eventually brought us another new fridge... it fit... and 18 hours later it stopped working! Now the building manger isn't talking to me and all my food is bad... awesome!

A couple weeks ago Dane's friend Andrew invited us to be guests on his Saturday night radio show on Evergreen College's 89.3 KAOS station! We both did sets of some pretty good tracks. At first I was super nervous about talking live on air, but once my face was up to the microphone Andrew started talking and suddenly it felt so natural to chat with him. He's good at what he does. :)

New rug!

We went estate sale browsing this weekend and found this awesome new rug for such a deal! $125 for a 8'x11' wool rug! (originally purchased by its first owner for $1000!) So today was movin' day, out with our old gross rug, and in with the new. This ment disassembling our living-room and my bedroom(which is a fancy tent in half of the living room), but all went well.

My sister also made us some yumyum Bloody Marys to prefunk with! Complete with classy cocktail skewers full of pickled onions and cheese. :)

Another walk through a delightful park in Olympia. We set out to make a special picture for an old classmate of ours who was just diagnosed with cancer. A Flickr page was set up for all of her friends to submit things to make her smile, so of course we added (last picture in this post). What a pretty park this was! We went later in the day, just before the sun started to set, so not very many other people were around. It was quiet so all the animals came out to say hello!

Yesterday we drove out to Longbranch Washington to visit my family on their old wooden boat. My mom called me up because they found an old abandoned cabin in the woods the had been left in quite curious shape. Dishes and little toys were still on the shelves, a raccoon skin was hanging from the ceiling beams, and a old wooden ski boat on warped metal tracks was left to rot outside. We think no one had been there since the late 60s or early 70s, which is why it was in especially interesting shape. No one had stolen anything, all the pieces were still there (probably because it was in the middle of nowhere....).

As mentioned in my previous post, I just went camping! We drove out to the Olympic National Forest and hiked out to Cape Alava, the coast. We saw plenty of wildlife (deer, racoons, snakes, bald eagles etc. etc.), and the weather cooperated the whole time. My pack was bigger than me & i collected a couple blisters (and discovered how well tape works on those blisters), and didn't fall down once! A very successful trip, I was lucky to have Dane who knows way more about outdoorsy things than me, and who has a fancy leatherman tool! We took lots of film pictures, too many to share!

This weekend I'm breaking out my mom's old teal & purple 90s backpacking pack and taking on the Cape Alava/Sand Point loop in the Olympic National park! I'm so excited, I bought my very own tent and sleeping pad a few days ago (the child size pad was less than half the price of the adult size at REI, I'm only 5'2" so it was a deal!!). I haven't really packed yet, but I've made tons of lists of what I shoooould pack... I'm sure I'll have lots of pictures to share. :)

4th of july weekend

I had Friday through Tuesday off this weekend! A well needed break, and the the weather cooperated too! It's been in the upper 70s and 80s this week, so nice! (for now at least... no sunburns yet!) I spent all of this time down in Olympia. We explored more parks, and bought a kiddie pool to drink cold beers in for the 4th of July(no pictures of that... probably for the best, I fell out of it at one point and hurt my knee...ha).

This holiday is one of my least favorites to tell the truth, fireworks make me really uneasy. I hate the big booms that never stop, although - at least it's a season for one form of natural selection! I watched my friend's idiot neighbors pour gasoline into the ground and throw fireworks at it to light it! Ahh so dumb! None of them deserve hands...

Well, these pictures are from another Olympia park. The tide was really low, & we underestimated just how wet our shoes would get... after a while we just had to take them off and walk barefoot (which was so nice, the water was uncommonly warm & delightful).

This weekend Dane & I explored to mysterious Mima Mounds of Olympia (Tipped off by a photographer friend). They were awesome, it's a prairie of lumps, and we were the ONLY people there on a pretty sunny day. Apparently not very many people know about them (I certainly didn't before...), but why wouldn't you want to explore giant land lumps??

We brought some lunch, cold beers, my favorite yellow picnic blanket - and stuffed it all into my new BAGGU backpack! Dane just got a BAGGU bag too, they are so versatile & classic looking - the hardest part is picking out what color you want!

Most of my closet consists of thrifty secondhand & vintage finds. I'm cheap(well, more like practical!) and like my clothes to be unique. I think it's important to buy your wardrobe from a large variety of shops as well, never brand yourself with one or two stores - you'll never have your own style!

One area I'm willing to spend some extra $$$ in are my shoes. The older I get, the more quality means to me. I'm done with shoes that only last one season, what a waste of money! These are my current favorites from my closet.... well, the Dulce boot hasn't even arrived yet - they were a Gilt.com impulse buy, but I think they're neat. :)

This 1920s print of a fairy girl has always hung in my parent's living-room, I loved it as a child for it's whimsy and charm. My mom got it from her grandmother's estate after she passed away many years ago, she too admired & coveted it as a kid growing up. When I moved out, I asked her if i could have it... but of course she said no - which makes sense because she has such a history with it. Dang...

Well, guess what? I found another framed print of it! I was at Vanity this weekend & saw it on the wall. It wasn't for sale initially - but I asked & the owner agreed to sell it to me! I'm so thrilled to have it join my art collection, it means a lot to me.

The big painting behind me was also in my house when I was little. It used to hang over the fireplace, but was replaced with other paintings and a mirror over the years. I found it in my mom's prop warehouse two years ago in poor shape, & i had to save it! It's another painting I studied as a kid & dreamed about. It appears to be a westernized Turkish battle scene with dead horses and red poppies(my favorite flower). Now it hangs over my bed, sweeeet sweet dreams.

My antique art collection is certainly growing, I'm not sure where I'm going to hang this new print yet :)

Today I was playing with my warehouse kitten in the garden for a bit. Charlie is still the cutest little thing, he's quite the charmer and will melt your heart in seconds doing kitty tricks. I can't believe how big he's getting! Probably about 10 months old, and doesn't look like a baby anymore :[ He also eats half his weight in food everyday, and is little squishy - but in the best and most adorable of ways!

I was going to bring him to my apartment to live, but he's a wild thing and needs the great outdoors to roam... so he lives with my parents! They love him to pieces though, it's a good fit.

I'm on a little family trip to the beach right now. We came knowing the forecast was only 42 degrees and rain... but hey, we lucked out with a sunny 55 degree day! (no coats required if your used to the northwest, it feels so warm!)

Today I wore my new vintage Gunne Sax dress, another amazing Etsy find. I'm starting a collection of this brand, they are the perfect 70s dresses for me. All you need to do is shorten them, and they look modernish and new. (It's a little sad to cut into these, but at least they get to be worn and loved!)

T3i's first trip - helicopter!

Got my Canon T3i today as planed, and one hour later I was in a helicopter!(pretty perfect timing....) Welcome to McMinnville Oregon... wine country! I had never been in a helicopter before today, it was pretty fun(duh, helicopter!). Our pilot was from Germany and super laid back, I had no fear at all flying up and down the hills of the area. I would love to do it again!

Oh, and the T3i is awesome!

NEW CAMERA TIME!

I'm picking up my new canon T3i in Orgeon this afternoon!(fingers crossed!) Because of the earthquake in Japan, a few parts for this camera are currently not in production, so stores are selling out everywhere! But since I'm heading south this week anyway, I'm making a bit of a side-tour to find one, plus no sales tax! I probably could have purchased one online and made this easier... buuuut eh - new camera new friend new stories. My old canon has been out of commission for about a year, and it's been heartbreaking! Part of my soul has been missing, the blog has suffered, and many things have been undocumented :/

I’ve been meaning to redo and add to my design portfolio website for a while now, the motivation just wasn’t hitting me though… until now!

I totally rebuilt it in three afternoons as a gift to myself. I was starting to feel depressed because I haven’t been working on much art lately, haven’t really done much of anything that makes my heart sing in the last couple weeks – so it was about time. No more artistic rut! As the weather starts getting warmer, and the sun starts to visit a bit more – I feel my attitude improving. I love winter, but after a while I always start to feel anxious and fidgety – almost bipolar at times (this was definitely this week!).

“True Love Will Find You In The End” by Headless Heroes (an Alela Diane side project!!) was also an inspiration. A sweet uplifting song that can be applied to many things I think.

So there you have it, I got mad about my lack of motivation, so I rebuilt my website!

The cabin Sara and Caitlin found on Guemes Island was next to a graveyard! So in the evening, with a few drinks swimming in our tummies, off we went to meet a couple ghosts!

When asked if I would like to come along on an island beach cabin adventure, I had two questions:
1. Do we get to go on a boat?
2. Can we be mermaids?
Upon those answers being yes, my answer was YES!
So off to Guemes we went! :)

Dane decided to adopt one of our warehouse kittens after all!
So last Saturday he stop by and picked up little Eddie Spaghetti. They are pretty much soul mates. If Dane was a cat, he would be like Eddie, & if Eddie was a people, he'd be like Dane.

My sister and I worked out butts off last week moving our lives into a shiny new apartment! The goal was to be unpacked and set-up by Friday to host a New Years party! It was intense, but we did it! (3 days!) The place looks great - very cozy, and full of our amazing collections of antiques and oddities :)

Yesterday was Selena's 21st birthday! One of her favorite bands also happened to be playing a bar show that night, perfect! Katie made her a yummy cake & funny mini bottle necklace (that was too heavy to wear!). We didn't have any candles for the cake, but Katie found a little Mexican flag... which acted as the candle later... :)

The show was really fun, we all drank a loooooot. Selena met the band, the lead singer's name is also "Chris Martin" - weeeeird. We danced up front for a long time and this morning our hearing was noticeably impaired... Happy Birthday Selena!!

Dane got some really awesome shots with this roll... that actually showed up this time after being developed :)
He's almost done with school for this quarter, & I'm also done with the busiest production time of the year at work - sooooo hopefully the two of us will have time to do lots of fun photographed adventures soon! :)

Dane has become an estate sale junkie with me of late. They are the best place to find antiques and curiosities of every sort. The other day Dane found an old Cannon camera for $5, and 10 rolls of expired film from 1985 for $1! This is the first roll he's tried out! :)

this little poopy kitten has charmed his way into our hearts!
two weeks ago he was a wild kitten living in a warehouse, and today he is as domestic as they come! truly - he is perfect :) welcome to your new home charlie baby!

My mother's warehouse has a bit of a kitten problem of late. Mama kitty and her three babies have moved in! We feel bad for them so we started feeding them, and now it's time to catch and save them!

This is Charlie, the most friendly of the kittens, we are currently teaching him how to be domestic and loose his feral tendencies. He will make a good pet for someone :)

This year Dane & I dressed up as the Shangri-la song "Leader of the Pack!"
Dane was the bad-ass greaser boyfriend(fresh from an accident)
Annnnd I was the goody goody girlfriend/prom date with road-burn!
We pulled these costumes out of nowhere and didn't really spend any money :)
Dane wore my dad's old Members Only jacket! And My dress came from an estate sale and was only $1.50! (it was also falling apart because of sun damage - so it was perfectly tattered.)

For the past month and a half I've been working with my mom's business, PJ Hummel & Company (who i also made a new website for!!). I've been dreaming of Lime Crime's Orange lipstick for over a year now. The only problem was the price... $16 for lipstick?! I'm a simple girl & I'm not really the type to "invest" in makeup, but after a year of not finding a similar color - i went of it! The packaging itself is tooooo cute! Pink with a sparkly unicorn... I like this brand, too bad i don't wear more makeup to buy more from them.

earlier this summer, dane and i tried to hike up to the wonderful snow lake, but it was still pretty snowy. reeeeaaally snowy actually, we had to turn back because we weren't quite prepared - and i was probably going to slip/stumble and fall of a cliff :)
